Agriscience College and Career Fair
This event is held annually the 2nd week of Feburary. This year's event will be Feb 19th from 6-8pm.
When most people when they hear the word agriculture, they only think of traditional farming. They don’t realize that American farms and ranches make up just 10% of the agriculture industry. With almost 22 million people employed, there is far more to agriculture than just sows, cows and plows. The Agriscience College and Career Fair held on February 21st, 2012 at Oakleaf High School, highlighted careers across the agriscience industry. The goal of this event is to open students’ eyes to the endless possibilities agriculture has to offer. To accomplish this goal, nearly 30 exhibitors set up informative and
interactive booths for over 400 Clay County students and parents. Exhibitors included industry representatives from CSX transportation, John Deere, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Bayer CropScience, National Weather Service, Florida Forest Service and more. There were 8 colleges and universities were in attendance showcasing education opportunities. Additionally, two workshops were held by CSX Transportation and Syngenta that went more in depth about careers offered by these two companies. Those students who completed a scavenger hunt were put into a drawing for an iPad2. Thanks to the event’s sponsors, Family Medical Centers and Clay County Farm Bureau, Dylan Page of Oakleaf High School walked away with a brand new iPad2. The event was well received by students and exhibitors alike. Emily Nickens, a senior at OHS said “It was a fun event where I was able to get honest opinions about jobs from people in the real world, especially helpful for me right now since I don’t know what I want to do with my life!” Students particularly enjoyed University of Florida’s Entomology and Nematology departments booth that included live specimens of hissing cockroaches! Attendees eyes were opened to some unique career ideas in agriculture at the event. Exhibits from the Jacksonville Zoo, the Jacksonville Jaguars Turf and UF’s Biology department were noted as being unexpected at an Agriscience College and Career Fair. Chris Dailey from The Jacksonville Zoo- Horticulture Department said “I was impressed with the fair, not many people know about zoological horticulture and we are always looking for ways to spread the word about this unique field. “ Please contact Keri Milligan, Plant Biotechnology eacher, at [email protected] for more information about this event.
